The Kent Police Gay and Lesbian Support Group

HOME PAGE WHY AIMS PROJECTS HATE CRIME STRUCTURE USEFUL SITES

The Support Group was set up in January 2000 where a few LGB staff met away from police premises to talk about any issues they had at work in relation to their sexuality.
It was decided at that meeting that a support group should be formed and the group has now grown to over 100 members.
The group maintains an independence from the police service to allow staff to voice any concerns more comfortably however we maintain a close working relationship with Kent Police

Being gay or lesbian in the police service can be very difficult for people and put a great strain on themselves.

Many gay, lesbian and bisexual employees fear that there will be a change in perception towards them from colleagues. They may fear that they will be subject to bullying or be totally ostracised.

There are a multitude of reasons why an employee may not be ‘out’ at work. They may not have told their family or friends, they could be married with children .. everyone has their reasons. We must recognise and respect the right to have a private life and not interfere.

On the reverse is the good that gay employees can do for the wider community and the Police Service. Members of the group are able to advise the force on direction and policy as well as being a critical friend when needed. This goes to start providing a better service for the gay community in Kent.

No one is under any illusions that there is not work to be done but many hurdles have been jumped and things are getting better for many.

WHY THE NEED?
